What are your tips and tricks to starting an online business?
March 9th, 2010 | by admin |The question is straightforward. I want to know how people make their online business successful? From how they start from scratch. How did you get your inspiration if you own an online business? Where do you get your products? Do you make them yourself or what? How do you market your products? And how did you come about making your own personal website? Did you make it yourself or hire a professional to do it? How much time out of the week does your online business take up?
To make an online business successful, you must know what you are doing. You can’t just walk through your business owning days blindly. That won’t work. You also have to love what you are doing. If not, you will become bored and even find that you aren’t caring or putting enough effort into it as you should be.
To start an online business, of course you must first establish the business. You will need at least these for things: 1. dba. 2. ein. 3. Seller’s permit. 4. business license.
Then, you will need a domain (www.yourname.com), website, host, shopping cart/ merchant account, etc. You can either pay someone to design the website for you (which I HIGHLY recommend if you are not good with html or css codes), or you can use a template. If you use a designer, they will let you know what shopping carts and hosting will work best with the website they created.
I got my inspiration for my business because I realized that only I can live out my dreams. I realized that I can’t work for someone else and always have my ideas put into action, or even be heard! I took a business class and fell in love. I found myself wanting to know everything about it, and actually reading business text books in my spare time.
I am not very creative with my hands, so I purchase my products from wholesalers. I love to shop, and shopping for my store, even sorting inventory, is really rewarding for me!
I market my products a few different ways. Word of mouth is a huge way!! Some how, my business almost always can be brought up in a conversation just by chance. Of course, I carry plenty of business cards around with me to hand out. I have email marketing through a subscription. I offer promotional items with my business name on it as well. There are many other things.
I did not have the time to learn how to do web design, and I wanted my website to be very customizable to my needs and wants. I knew that a template wouldn’t give me what I needed. I looked around for a web designer and glanced at many portfolios until I found one that I liked. I got VERY lucky to find a designer that offered a shopping cart in the one time fee.
Shopping carts can get very expensive, the price goes up with the more products you get. I don’t have to pay a monthly fee.
I would say that my business probably takes up a large chunk of my time during the week, including weekends. My work does not stop during the weekends. But, I got very lucky because I still have time to do things that I like… even though taking care of my business is probably my favorite thing to do. I still find time to see my friends and spend time with my family often.
Good Luck

First it takes patience. You can’t expect to be rich overnight. Personally I have a business with customers and patience is definitely required. I also have support group for internet marketers. I am interested health products for example I sell products for health. My products are from the company who makes the product for me to sell. Also I market my product with the help of my support group and teammates. I have a training website that teaches how to market. When you understand what is involved you can use different strategies to help buld your business.

All great questions. Many people do not know where to start when it comes to an online home based business. Making your business successful will depend on which business model you choose. If you already have a niche, or product in mind then you will have a lot of work to do. Product creation is just the beginning. Website development, sales copy, product fulfillment, customer service, and returns are all realities to be dealt with. I will tell you the easiest way to start an online business is through affiliate programs. The best part of affiliate programs is that you do not have to worry about any of these aspects. The site, sales copy, product fulfillment, customer service, and any and all returns are all handled by the owner. Yet you will receive a healthy commission, as much as 75% of the sales price, for being the proverbial "middle man". You will be learning about how the sales process works, so it is truly a earn as you learn way to get started. Once you become successful at affiliate marketing, you will have learned a great deal about all the aspects that are necessary to sell any product on the internet. You may even have generated enough income to outsource the whole product creation, site building, and sales copy process so that your own product has become funded through affiliate marketing. Many top internet business entrepreneurs got their start in affiliate marketing. I highly recommend it for anyone just starting out, as it is very low risk. A couple hours a day should be plenty of time to start out. Most people become infatuated at first, and spend more than that. Do some simple tasks consistently, do not get discouraged or distracted, don’t give up, continue to learn, and you should become successful.

I’m with Tim H on the Affiliate Marketing, it is the easiest way to start an online business. The reason I say this is because you do not have to keep track of product, you do not have to have an (EIN) number but you can get one later down the road when you are ready, you can start out with very low cost and when I say that it really depends on what you know and what you decide to pay for as far as lets say for example; a computer, internet access, Having someone build a website for you, purchasing a domain Name, hosting, and if you pay to learn how to do affiliate marketing which if they are worth there salt will teach you how to build a website, how to market, how to get inbound links and so on. Now this being said, either way you go it is a lot of work but you can dictate the time you spend on it. The more time the faster you will achieve your goal the less time the longer it will take. This should roughly answer the time question. Avg. time 5 to 10 hours per week on the low end of the scale.
My inspiration:
My inspiration for doing what I do is that I like being my own boss, I have for most of my life been self employed an I enjoy the challenge of making my own way in life. I always wanted to start an online business and now I’m working on it. This may not be the answer you were looking for but is it for me.
Where do you get your Products:
At this point in time I try to avoid dealing with physical products or I should say having products in my possession. The reason for that is then you have to deal with drop shipping and inventory and that gets into a whole mess as far as dealing with sales and and use tax and franchise an excise tax and depending on the state you are in a privilege tax, Then you have to set up customer service (people have to get a hold of someone if they have a problem), if that is only you then It would be a little taxing at times. You also would have to set up an LLC at the least just for your own protection (if someone decided to sue you for whatever the reason) They will only be able to sue the LLC and not you personally whereas if you were a sole proprietor they can sue you personally for whatever they think they can get.
Starting from scratch:
First I will tell you what I did wrong well not necessarily wrong but I would have done a different route had I known then what I know now. I started out with an LLC and got all the formation papers filled out to submit to the Secretary of State and payed the fee, received my articles of organization, filled out the information for a sales and use tax account, franchise and excise tax account, my (EIN) number, My (SIC) number, my (NAIC) number and my business license with the city. This was not a cost effective way to start at least not for an affiliate marketing business. I would have formed an LLC regardless but I would have done it later rather than right off the bat.
For an affiliate marketing business all you need to start out is:
1.Internet access
2. A computer (at least a 3 to 4 GB with a duo core processor and a 15" to 17" screen and web cam) To keep costs down if you do not already have microsoft office $149.00 in your computer which deals with word, excell, power point etc… download (open office) it’s free.
3. a website to promote your affiliate products
4. sign up at the different affiliate sites like clickbank.com, cj.com, and amazon associates.com, there are more but these are three that are well known. Choose the products you want to promote, designing your website around those products.
5. Any information you either research or pay for to gain the knowledge to get up and going.
To start out you can be a sole proprietor since with affiliate marketing you are promoting someone elses product and customers will go to the place where they bought the product to make their inquiries if they have any problems. This leaves you out of the loop as far as you having to deal with customers. You will not have to have a business license until you make a certain amount usually between $3,000-$4,000 you will have to check with the city in which you live to get the details. At that point you may have to deal with the state about the sales and use tax and frachise and exicise tax. But until then you will not have to pay any cash out of pocket or you shouldn’t have to.
Next you will want to set up a business bank account which will be your name with a dba after it which just means (also known as) which would be your company name. Some banks will ask you for a business license but if the city doesn’t require it until you make a certain amount even for an LLC, then they should know this, but not always. I came across this problem and told them I didn’t need it explaining the city’s stand but in the end I just went and did it to satisfy them. You will use you SSN as your tax id#.
I got a little long and my answer was cut off but you asked a lot .I have more info. if you want more email me at mikem0868@yahoo.com. and I’ll fill in what was lost. if not good luck

Starting a online business is really hard honestly. Imagine the tons of competitors you will encounter in the web. But why some online business become successful? I think because they choose a online business that they really like. Example, a girl who loves fashion make a online business who sells great dresses. If she really loves what she do, for sure all the possible things that can be done in order to be successful will be test by her to see if it really works..
